Philips HeartStart FR3 automated external defibrillator (AED) in the U.S. for professional responders who treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). As the smallest and lightest professional-grade AED among leading global manufacturers, the HeartStart FR3 is Philips’ most advanced professional-grade AED. SCA is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming nearly 300,000 lives each year. Defibrillation is recognized as the only definitive treatment for ventricular fibrillation, the abnormal heart rhythm most often associated with SCA. While cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may help prolong the window of survival, CPR alone cannot restore a normal cardiac rhythm. After 10 minutes without defibrillation, few attempts to resuscitate an SCA victim are successful.

Recognizing that time-to-therapy matters, the HeartStart FR3 significantly reduces deployment time by eliminating steps to help responders start delivery of the right therapy – CPR or defibrillation – on the patient faster. The FR3 automatically powers on when the Philips HeartStart FR3 carry case is opened(1). The device also features easy to access, pre-connected peel and place pads that do not require opening a foil pouch. These unique features help speed therapy delivery.

The HeartStart FR3 includes several innovations designed to make it easier for professional responders to treat SCA, including a bright, high-resolution, color LCD that provides visible prompts for easier use in noisy environments; a CPR metronome that keeps the beat for consistent chest compressions; and bilingual configurability so that voice and text prompts can be clearly understood by a variety of responders. Philips makes it easy for programs to standardize on one pad set, as Philips SMART Pads III are compatible for use with Philips HeartStart FR2-series and work with Philips monitor/defibrillators, including HeartStart MRx, for easy hand-off.

The HeartStart FR3 also enables responders to treat infants and children faster. There is no need to change defibrillation pads, as the SMART Pads III can be used on adults and children. When inserted into the HeartStart FR3, the infant/child key automatically decreases the defibrillation therapy and implements the configured infant/child CPR protocols.

FR3 AED Info:

The Philips HeartStart FR3 is Philips’ finest professional-grade AED within their HeartStart lineup. It’s the smallest and lightest AED available on the market (it weighs a meager 3.5 pounds), and despite its compact size and light weight, the FR3 is incredibly rugged and capable of withstanding extreme conditions. Receiving a rating of IP55, the FR3 is capable of withstanding dust and jetting water, providing first responders subject to the harshest environments, while also being versatile – for use on all ages, including adults, children and infants.

Patented SMART Analysis heart rhythm assessment and SMART Biphasic defibrillation therapy, clinically proven in nearly 10 years of use. No other biphasic waveform is as well documented. Easy To Use Using the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator is simple. Pulling the green handle powers -up the defibrillator and activates voice instructions. These instructions are paced to your actions, to help guide you through the entire process, from placing pads on the patient to delivering a defibrillation shock. HeartStart OnSite determines if a shock is needed, based on its automated assessment of the victim’s heart rhythm: If a shock is needed, the defibrillator directs you to press the flashing orange “Shock” button. Then,HeartStart OnSite delivers a dose of low- energy biphasic therapy, a highly effective defibrillation waveform that is also gentle to the heart. If a shock is not needed, the OnSite Defibrillator instructs you to assess the patient and to perform CPR when necessary. While performing CPR, the defibrillator’s voice instructions can be activated to coach you on the frequency and depth of compressions. HeartStart OnSite also reminds you to call emergency medical services (EMS). These are so easy to use, they are the number one seller for both at home use and small water crafts, boats, and small businesses when used with a hard case.

Learn cpr and how to use an aed defibrillator

Everyone should learn how to perform cpr and what to do if someone is choking or needs a defibrillator (aed)!

CPR Classes should be compulsory for every parent as well  as those working with children and young people. In fact they really should teach cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and other first aid skills at school so that everyone has access to learning this potentially lifesaving skill. The Red Cross or the American Heart Association can often help schools and colleges run these programs. Why not learn child/infant CPR today? It is bad enough to witness a fatality but imagine if you found out later that the person, your child perhaps or another loved one, could have lived if you or someone else at the scene had performed pediatric CPR. Our emergency services are terrific but they cannot always be where they are needed and while you are waiting for them to arrive the person could die. Studies have shown that starting CPR and using an AED can save lives. Once the heart stops beating you do not have much time before it will not be possible to restart it. At CPR training, which can take place locally or you can take a class online, you will learn three different but related CPR techniques being those for children, for infants and for adults. The process to save a child is a slightly modified version of that applied to an adult. For an infant it is quite different. If you ever have to perform cardiac pulmonary resuscitation on an infant and you are on your own you should do one minute of CPR prior to calling 911 for an ambulance and then continue doing chest compressions and giving rescue breaths until the ambulance arrives.

Who offers CPR training? When you start looking for a place to learn the process, you need to check that your instructor is a certified first aid and CPR instructor. Ideally the course should be accredited by either the Red Cross or the American Heart Association. The American Red Cross provide train the trainer courses if this is something you would be interested in doing after you have yourself learnt how to do CPR. If you cannot find local classes you can train via online training provided by the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. If you hate training using a computer, you could always contact your nearest hospital or medical center and ask if they would organize some CPR training if you were to get a group together. You could then canvas for other interested parties at your kids school, coffee mornings or even put a notice up in your local store. When you do take the class, the first thing you will be taught is to remember your role is only to try to keep someone alive until the emergency services arrive. You are not going to learn how to be a replacement for a doctor or other forms of medical attention. It is vital that you or someone else call 911. As you will learn, administering CPR can save someone’s life in the short term but they will also require urgent medical attention to keep them alive.

Remember you only start cardiac pulmonary resuscitation if the heart actually stops and the medics are going to want to know what caused this to happen to prevent it reoccurring at a later date. It doesn’t matter if you live in California or Texas, CPR training is not hard to find once you start looking. Learn how to use an AED as well as perform CPR More CPR classes are also offering lessons in the use of an AED (automatic external defibrillator). Some people will carry these devices around in their cars or have them in their homes. They are also found in public buildings including offices, train stations etc. Studies show that while CPR is a lifesaver, when combined with AED the results are even better. You should never attempt to use a defibrillator until you have been properly trained. If you have passed the training, you will have been taught that in most cases where an AED is required, CPR will already have commenced and should continue if possible while the AED is being prepared for use. You would then allow the AED to prompt what should happen next. If you have to give a shock to the patient always make sure everyone else is standing clear as you don’t want to end up with more than one casualty. You would never use an AED on a child under one years of age. In addition to covering CPR and AED, some courses also cover how to deal with blood borne pathogens and other first aid issues.

Do you have to have any previous medical certification? CPR classes do not require you to have any formal qualifications or existing medical knowledge. Some people don’t attend out of fear they will be ridiculed or will make a fool of themselves. The instructor will have seen it all before and remember you are learning how to potentially save someone’s life. There is nothing to ridicule about that. On completion of your course you should receive a laminated pack of CPR/AED cards to help keep your knowledge of first aid fresh and up to date. CPR recertification keeps you up to date! You will have to recertify, usually every two years, if you want to retain your qualification. The thinking and practice behind the best way to administer the technique is constantly being investigated and improved upon. While the basics at CPR classes will remain the same, you may find out new knowledge when you go for CPR recertification that could lead to you saving someone else’s life.

In fact, it is said that more men and women die from cardiovascular disease in the United States than any other illness. If you suspect that someone is experiencing cardiac arrest, it is critical that they are treated immediately. Cardiac arrest can claim the life of its victim in nearly 10 minutes, which may not give paramedics enough time to arrive. Fortunately, advancements in technology are increasing the odds of reviving people who are suffering from cardiac arrest. Through the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) ordinary people can help save lives.

Did you know that defibrillators can actually reestablish a normal rhythm…in turn, bringing back a normal heart beat? When a person goes into cardiac arrest, the heart no longer functions appropriately, causing starvation of oxygen. Without oxygen, vital organs begin to fail. A defibrillator can get the heart working properly again, restoring oxygen flow. Surprisingly enough, defibrillators first appeared as early as the 1890s; although it’s taken many more years to refine them. Today almost anyone can buy an AED, a defibrillator that is not much bigger than an IPAD. These innovative devices analyze the heart’s rhythm for abnormalities and direct the user to deliver an electric shock to the heart if necessary. What makes an AED truly amazing is its ease of use and dual function. AEDs use voice prompts to instruct the rescuer. Once the device is turned on, electrodes are to be placed on the victim’s chest. At this time, the AED will begin monitoring the victim’s heartbeat. If an abnormality is detected, the AED will prompt the rescuer to stand clear of the victim and press the shock button. The victim’s best chance for survival is within the first three minutes of collapsing. After the initial shock, the victim’s survival rate will begin to drop dramatically. If there is no pulse after the first shock, it is important to administer CPR and reanalyze the heart rhythm until an EMT or Paramedic arrives.

Many public places and businesses have AED’s readily available at their facilities. People high at risk for heart problems are also urged to buy an AED for use at home. When the critical time comes, combined with first aid training, AED’s can prevent the untimely death of a co-worker, student or loved one. If you’re considering purchasing an AED for your home, business or another location, you’ll want to be sure that you’re buying a quality device that will be ready at the time of rescue. Keep in mind that you will need an AED permit which is available through our AED store for free. One highly rated AED is the Philips HeartStart Onsite (just one of several Philips AEDs). It is also recommended that you purchase an extra AED electrode cartridge for adults or even a pediatric (child pads) as well. A Philips AED is just one of the many trusted brands available to you.
